The pull-up is a functional exercise that targets various upper body muscle groups. Primarily engaging the latissimus dorsi muscle, which spans from the mid-back to the armpits and shoulder blades. This muscle is responsible for retracting the shoulder blades and extending and internally rotating the arms. Supporting this movement are the trapezius muscles, responsible for scapular motion and arm support. The infraspinatus muscle aids in shoulder extension, while a muscle is engaged for spine straightening. Depending on the pull-up variation, the triceps, deltoid, teres major, brachioradialis, biceps, and pectoralis major muscles may also be involved.
